Post-Race Analysis:

Camden, South Carolina - March 29, 2008: Augustin Stable’s Imagina (Chi) ran down pacemaker Dr. Bloomer before the ninth of 10 fences and powered away late to win the $75,000 Carolina First Carolina Cup at Springdale Race Course Saturday.

The first leg of the Steeplechase Triple Crown, the race attracted a field of five evenly matched novice steeplechasers, but 6-year-old mare Imagina dispatched four geldings in an easy nine-length romp for trainer Sanna Hendriks and jockey Jody Petty. Red Letter Day rallied late for second with Swimming River third. Bred in Chile, Imagina covered the 2 1/8 miles and 10 fences in 4:06.7.

A maiden winner over the course in 2007, Imagina took on males for the first time and made it look easy. Dr. Bloomer made the early running but began to tire on the final trip down the backside. Fourth early, Imagina advanced to second at the eighth fence and took aim on the leader the ninth. By the final turn, she owned a commanding lead and skipped over the last to win with little urging from Petty.

The jockey credited his mare’s tenacity: “She loves to run down horses and you can just feel her see horses and run them down,” Petty said. “She loves to see horses in front of her and she loves to just conquer them. She sees what she wants to do and she just reaches for it. That really worked today because of how the race set up.”

Imagina lost all four hurdle starts in 2006, her first year in the United States. In 2007, she won three of eight starts (including two stakes) and pocketed just shy of $73,000.

The race, normally a right of spring for everyone from horse owners to college students, took place in a driving rainstorm with temperatures decreasing throughout the day – not that it bothered the winner. “Once the race starts, you forget the world is spinning,” said Petty. “I pulled up and the adrenaline was going – I felt great. Then I stood around for a while and got pretty cold pretty quickly. I’m glad it’s over.”

The Triple Crown continues at Middleburg, Va. for the $75,000 Temple Gwathmey April 19. The final leg comes with the $75,000 National Hunt Cup at Radnor, Pa. May 17.
