Post-Race Analysis:
Elmont, New York - June 12, 2005: Paradise's Boss established a
new course record as he dominated the $75,000 Meadow Brook at Belmont
Park, defeating Class Yankee by five widening lengths. It was another
1 1/4 lengths back to favorite Mixed Up. The winning time of 4:33.95
for the 2 1/2-mile test that included only 10 hurdles, two less
than previous years, shattered the course record of 4:36.53 established
by Sur La Tete last year.

Paradise's Boss won the Grade II Meadow
Brook, the third leg of the Steeplechase Triple Crown, by
five lengths.
|
Mrs. Henry F. Stern's Paradise's Boss turned the third leg of the
Steeplechase Triple Crown into a laugher under jockey Xavier Aizpuru.
A front-runner in all of his races last year, Paradise's Boss rated
off the early leaders in the Meadow Brook - Mixed Up, Hay Getoutofmyway,
Why Not Baby and Irish Actor - before making a bid with about 3
furlongs to go. Paradise's Boss surged to the lead coming out of
the final turn, had plenty in reserve for the last two fences in
the stretch and gradually lengthened his advantage on the run-in.
He is trained by Jack Fisher, who won the 2002 Meadow Brook with
50-1 shot Sharp Face.

Meadow Brook.
|
Bred in Florida by Juan Escobar, Paradise’s Boss raced on the flat
with trainer Terri Pompay until purchased by Fisher late in 2003.
Over jumps, the former $20,000 claimer has won half his 10 career
starts and earned $172,110. The 5-year-old son of That's Our Buck
(by Buckaroo) won four races last year en route to earning the 2004
novice championship. Based on those credentials, Paradise’s Boss
was the heavy Triple Crown favorite at the start of the season,
but the gelding faltered in the first two legs of the series, finishing
a credible third in the Temple Gwathmey, but reporting home last
in the National Hunt Cup. As a result, Paradise’s Boss was dismissed
at 34-1 in the Meadow Brook. When 8-year-old mare Class Yankee finished
second at 24-1, those two lit up the tote board with a $1,209 exacta
and they keyed a $4,723 trifecta over 8-5 favorite Mixed Up.

The Grade II Meadow Brook lured the first two winners
of the Steeplechase Triple Crown: Toughkenamon (Temple Gwathmey)
and Mixed Up (National Hunt Cup). Mixed Up led for much of the race
before slipping back to fourth around the final turn and then coming
on again after the last fence to claim third. Toughkenamon raced
near the back of the pack and was pulled-up approaching the last
fence.
Edited from NSA press release.
The complete order of finish for the Meadow Brook is set forth
below.

II Meadow Brook.
|
The Meadow Brook is named after the Meadow Brook Hounds, a fox
hunt that was based near Belmont Park on the north shore of Nassau
County, Long Island. Founded in 1881, the hunt was generally considered
one of the best in the United States during the first half of the
20th century. They held their first steeplechase meet in 1883 on
the Hempstead Plains, and the featured race was the Meadow Brook
Cup, a 21-fence timber race. In 1919 the course moved to the estate
of Mr. F. Ambrose Clark in Old Westbury, where the Meadow Brook
Cup was run until World War II intervened in 1942. Mr. Clark, for
many years a leading steeplechase owner, was the master of the Meadow
Brook Hounds in the 1920's. The Meadow Brook Hounds folded in 1970
as a result of the development of Nassau County, which borders New
York City and is only 12 miles from Manhattan. The hunt's clubhouse
still stands today as the home of the Meadow Brook Golf Club in
Jericho, New York.
The Meadow Brook Steeplechase, not to be confused with the Meadow
Brook Cup, was first run at Belmont Park in 1916 and has a long
and storied history. The race's prior winners include Hall of Famers
Elkridge, Neji and L'Escargot. Also run at Aqueduct for a time,
the race was a fixture at NYRA tracks until 1971. The Meadow Brook
was revived in 1999 as the final leg of the Triple Crown. In six
years, no horse has swept the Steeplechase Triple Crown, although
four have won two legs.
