after the last fence to win going away by 3 1/2 lengths. It was
18 1/2 lengths back to the third place finisher, Saitensohn (Ger).

completed the 2 1/4-mile course in 4:10.2 .
The 7th annual running of this Grade III event was reduced to just
six runners with the late scratches of Moneytrain (Ger), Major Hero
and Trebizond (Ire).

Racey Dreamer, with jockey Matt McCarron
up, winning the Grade III Ferguson.
|
Sent off as the 1-2 favorite, Racey Dreamer was taken
well off the early pace by jockey Matt McCarron. Shady Valley immediately
opened up a big early lead as Racey Dreamer tracked in fourth, ten
lengths back after the first mile. Shady Valley kept finding more
as the field raced down the backside the last time, with jockey
Tom Foley extending his lead with every stride. Racey Dreamer moved
up to second at the last fence on the backstretch and got to within
2 ½ lengths of the leader as they neared the final jump. As he landed
over the last, McCarron pulled Racey Dreamer to the inside of Shady
Valley and commenced his winning move, steadily wearing down Shady
Valley to win his sixth race in-a-row (two on the flat) with plenty
in reserve.
Winning trainer Doug Fout was glad that Racey Dreamer
put himself in position to win by relaxing off the early pace. "I
worried about him rating, and I wasn't sure he would unless they
really ran out of there," Fout told the National Steeplechase Association.
"(Shady Valley) went for the lead and Matt was able to get our horse
to relax. That's a great sign because if he's going to go on and
be a good horse he needs to do that."

Racey Dreamer, as son of A.P. Indy, is
undefeated in four career starts over hurdles..
|
EMO Stable's purchased Racey Dreamer from breeder Richard Santulli
last fall. The regally bred gelding had won four of eight starts
on the flat, and could have been claimed for $20,000 in his last
start at the Meadowlands. While the 5-year-old son of A.P. Indy
won the $100,000 Grade I National Hunt Cup at Radnor this spring,
the Ferguson was his first stakes victory against open company.

RACEY DREAMER , unhurried early,
was put to urging leaving the second last fence, lodged a
bid inside of SHADY VALLEY leaving the final jump and drew
clear under a drive. SHADY VALLEY opened up a lengthy lead,
bobbled after the penultimate and final fences, was overtaken
a sixteenth out and gave way grudgingly. SAITENSOHN (GER)
chased the pace and lacked a late response. INDISPENSABLE
failed to menace. NAJJM faltered and was not abused late.
DUKE OF EARL (IRE) was pulled up.
