Post-Race Analysis:
July 12, 2003 - New Kent, Virginia: Anofferucantrefuse lead from
start to finish to capture the $50,000 Grade III David L. "Zeke"
Ferguson Memorial at Colonial Downs, defeating Tres Touche by 2
3/4-lengths. Favorite Praise The Prince was another length back
in third. The final time for he 2 1/4-mile test was 4:09.32, well
off the stakes record of 3:59.20 established by Spring Salute in
2000.

Anofferucantrefuse was one of two Grade
I winners in the Ferguson, but was dismissed at 21-1.
|
Dismissed at odds of 21-1, Fox Ridge Farm's Anofferucantrefuse
was one of two Grade I winners entered in the Ferguson (the other
was favorite Praise The Prince). Anofferucantrefuse went right to
the front, opened up on the rest of the field by 8 lengths, and
was never challenged. The 6-year-old son of Red Ransom (by Roberto)
won the Grade I Aitcheson last year and finished second in the Grade
I Meadow Brook, both restricted to novices. The Ferguson was his
first victory since the Aitcheson last year. Anofferucantrefuse
finished third in the Grade II Atlanta Cup earlier this year and
was pulled-up in his most recent start, the Grade I Royal Chase.
He was ridden by journeyman Cyril Murphy.
"He had the lead and was jumping well," said winning trainer Tom
Voss, "and that's hard to beat." The three-time defending leading
steeplechase trainer said his bay horse is not always so predictable.
"He's a funny type of horse. I can't figure it out. He's a really
good horse on a certain day. But sometimes he'll just pull himself
up. That's what he does, he'll just pull himself up."

Voss noted that a virus went through his whole barn
this spring. "Everyone got it," he said, "but Anofferucantrefuse
was the sickest of all. He's just now started to come around in
the last couple of months."
Anofferucantrefuse is a full brother to graded stakes winner Upper
Noosh, who was also bred and raced by Fox Ridge Farm. Upper Noosh
was a turf specialist who won the Grade III Miss Grillo at Belmont,
finished second in the Grade III Pucker Up Stakes at the Meadowlands
and was third in a pair of Graded stakes at Saratoga: the prestigious
Grade II Diana Handicap and Grade III Saratoga Breeders' Cup Handicap.
Anofferucantrefuse and Upper Noosh are both out of the unraced mare
Valid Offer, by Val de l'Orne. Val de l'Orne was the Champion 3-year-old
of France in 1975 when he won a pair of 1 1/2 mile races: the Prix
Du Jockey Club (Fr-I) and the Prix Hocquart (Fr-II), as well as
the 1 3/8ths mile Prix Noailles (Fr-II). He finished second in the
Grand Criterium (Fr-I) as a 2-year-old.
|
|
|
Tres Touche finished second in the Grade
III Ferguson for the second year in a row.
|
Contrarian Stables Tres Touche finished second in the Ferguson
for the second year in a row. The 6-year-old son of Poles Apart
(by Danzig) tracked Anofferucantrefuse for the entire race but couldn't
get closer than 2-lengths to he winner. Tres Touche has captured
a steeplechase stakes race in each of the last four seasons, including
the Grade III Marcellus Frost at Iroquois earlier this year. He
has eight lifetime steeplechase victories to his credit and has
earned $367,087 from 24 lifetime starts over fences. He is trained
by Ricky Hendricks and was ridden by David Bentley.
Augustin Stables' Praise The Prince (NZ) ran near the back of the
pack early, made a big move around the final turn, but left himself
too much to do. An earner of $420,304 over fences, the 8-year-old
son of Prince of Praise (NZ) (by Crossways (GB)) is a multiple graded
stakes winner, having captured the Grade I Hard Scuffle and the
Grade I Meadow Brook as well as the Grade II A.P. Smithwick as a
novice two years ago. This year Praise The Prince finished third
in the Grade I Royal Chase at Keeneland and then finished second
to Pelagos (Fr) in the Grade I Iroquois in his last start. He is
trained by Sanna Neilson and was ridden by Jody Petty.

|
|
Praise The Prince (center) was dispatched
as the favorite but finished third in the Ferguson.
|
Mrs. F. Eugene Dixon's Indispensable, who won the Ferguson two
years ago, finished fourth in this year's edition, beaten a scant
nose for third. Trained by this year's leading steeplechase trainer
Jack Fisher, the 9-year-old son of Mane Minister (by Deputy Minister)
is winless since capturing the Miles Valentine last year. Over his
lengthy career Indispensable has registered four wins, including
stakes victories in each of the last two years, while earning $170,230.
Two-time champion steeplechase jockey Gus Brown was in the irons.
|
|
|
Indispensable won the Ferguson two years
ago and was one of two 9-year-olds who ran in this year's
race.
|
Lee McKinney's Feeling So Pretty, a 9-year-old mare, raced last
or next-to-last for most of the race and came up empty in the stretch
passing tired horses to finish sixth. The daughter of Nordic Legend
(by Northern Dancer) won an allowance hurdle race at Iroquois in
May before finishing fifth in the Miles Valentine at Fair Hill on
Memorial Day. Owner-trainer Lee McKinney is the sister of Olympic
Gold Medal ski champion Tara McKinney.
Mrs. Beverly R. Steinman's Golden Marvel (Fr) was making his first
start in 21 months and ran like he needed the race, tracking the
early pace before fading to seventh in the 10-horse field. The 7-year-old
son of Linamix (Fr) (by Mendez (Fr)) set a Colonial Downs course
record in 2001 when he won the National Steeplechase Association
novice championship, but missed last season with an injury to his
right knee.

|
|
Peter G. Schiff, shown here with his
son Ted, is the proprietor of Fox Ridge Farm, who bred and
races Ferguson winner Anofferucantrefuse.
|
Kathy Neilson's Regal Again made a strong move down the backside
the last time to reach second, but then faded badly to finish last.
Regal Again had been on a tear this spring, winning four of six
starts over hurdles prior to the Ferguson. The 5-year-old son of
Regal Classic (by Vice Regent) broke his maiden at Little Everglades
in March and was then claimed by Neilson from trainer Jack Fisher
in his next start.
Mulahen (GB) and Teb's Bend both scratched.
The complete order of finish for the Ferguson is set forth below.

KAY JEFFORDS DEAD
Mrs. Walter M. "Kay" Jeffords, whose steeplechaser Lonesome
Glory was a five-time champion, died July 7 in her New York City
home. Jeffords, who had turned 80 two weeks ago, had suffered from
Parkinson's disease.
Bred by Jeffords' late husband, Walter M. Jeffords Jr., Lonesome
Glory won 24 of 44 races and earned $1,325,868. Lonesome Glory was
the top jumper in 1992-93, 1995, 1997, and 1999. Kay Jeffords also
raced steeplechase stakes winners Strawberry Angel, Turkish Corner,
and Yellowroad and maintained a racing stable up to the time of
her death.
A New York City native, Jeffords and her husband adored dogs--not
just hunting hounds, but all breeds. They enjoyed raising Boston
Terriers and Pekinese and showed them in her name. Jeffords is survived
by two sons, George and John; a daughter, Sally; and stepson Walter
M. Jeffords III; plus grandchildren Charlotte, Gabriella, Jofka,
Julian, and Sam. Her mother-in-law was a niece of Samuel D. Riddle,
who owned Man o' War.
