Post-Race Analysis:

Elmont, New York - June 5, 2003: Trebizond (Ire) won the $100,000 Grade I Meadow Brook Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths over longshot Blasphemous. It was another neck back to Mr Perkolater in third. The final time for the 2 1/2 miles test run over 12 fences was 4:57.65 over a soft course, well off the track record of 4:37.32 established by Sharp Face last year.

Trebizond (center) pulls away from Blasphemous (left) and Mr. Perkolater (note rider has lost his irons) in the final yards of the Meadow Brook.

Blasphemous was rank at the start and assumed the early lead. Preemptive Strike took control about a mile into the race, with Blasphemous continuing to race forwardly. Trebizond was content to bide his time in mid-pack early, made an aggressive move into third place along the rail through the stretch the second time, and assumed the lead around the final turn. Tom Foley had his charge in front by 3 1/2 at the top of the stretch, but had an anxious moment at the next-to-last fence when Trebizond dove through the hedge and stumbled upon landing. The mistake didn't cost Trebizond though, as he quickly regained his composure to jump the final fence cleanly and prevail by 3 1/4 lengths.

Owned by William C. Lickle and trained by Kathy Neilson, Trebizond has now won four of 14 career jump starts, and has earned $204,690. The 7-year-old Irish-bred is 2-for-4 this year, with both victories coming in Grade I novice events.

Winning trainer Kathy Neilson sent Trebizond out to capture two Grade I novice stakes races this year.

"Trebizond really benefited from the soft turf today," said his trainer Kathy Neilson after the race. "I didn't want him too close to the early pace, and Tom gave him a great ride. He may jump awkwardly every now and again, but Tom seems to get a good run out of him. We'll go on to Saratga with him and try the Smithwick and the Turf Writers." Neilson had a banner day at Belmont, as she also saddled Mr. Perkolater to finish third in the Meadow Brook.

"Trebizond is a horse that you don't have to keep after, so I kept him wedged in near the back of the pack," said winning jockey Tom Foley. "The course was pretty soft in certain spots, but he handles that so well. I asked him to run at the top of the stretch and he just opened up. I was very pleased with him, despite the stumble at the second-to-last fence."

Winning jockey Tom Foley is all smiles as he returns to the winner's circle with Trebizond after the Grade I Meadow Brook.

Blasphemous ran a peculiar race, going to the lead early, fading to last down the backside the final time, and then coming on again with a late drive too just get up for second place in the final stride. The 5-year-old son of Providential (Ire) (by Run The Gauntlet) beat Trebizond the last time those two met, but was pulled-up in his last race before the Meadow Brook.

Third place finisher Mr. Perkolater had a good excuse when his jockey, Michael Traurig, lost his left stirrup going down the backstretch the last time. Failing to regain his iron around the final turn, Traurig then purposely kicked-out his right foot before the last two fences, which he jumped without stirrups. Traurig came off his mount shortly after the finish, but did an excellent job to complete the race under difficult circumstances. Owned by Mrs. S.K. Johnston, Mr. Perkolater is a 5-year-old son of leading steeplechase sire Northern Baby (by Northern Dancer).

Peachtree Stables Hotspur raced near the back of the pack early before moving up around the final turn to finish a well-beaten fourth. The 6 year-old son of Pine Bluff (by Danzig) is conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard.

Armata Stable's Coal Dust moved into contention down the back side the last time but then tired to finish fifth. The 4-year-old son of Miner's Mark (by Mr. Prospector) is trained by three-time defending steeplechase trainer champion Tom Voss, who is still searching for his first Steeplechase Triple Crown win.

Blasphemous (left) leads (to his right) Trebizond, Senor Melchor, Sham Aciss, Naughty Prince and Preemptive Strike at the first fence of the Meadow Brook.

Whitewood Farm's Understood had the lead going into the far turn and was still second approaching the last fence. The 7-year-old son of Pistolet Bleu (Ire) (by Top Ville (Ire)) stumbled badly behind upon landing and struggled home sixth.

Happenstance Stables Sham Aciss raced near the back of the back and never threatened. The 5-year-old son of Roy (by Fappiano) is trained by this year's leading steeplechase trainer Jack Fisher, who won the Meadow Brook last year with 50-1 Sharp Face.

Fighting Star tired around the final turn and left the course at the top of the stretch before the 11th fence. The 5-year-old son of Chenin Blanc (by Lepheor) is owned by Willard C. "Mike" Freeman, a successful trainer on the New York circuit last century who trained the 1969 Filly Triple Crown winner Shuvee. Shuvee was retired in 1972 with earnings of $890,445, more than any other filly or mare had earned at the time, and a record that stood until the mid-80's. She was not only the best of her gender, she was also the first filly or mare to win the two-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup, a feat she accomplished two years in a row. On the strength of these and other stakes victories, Shuvee was named champion older filly or mare in both 1970 and 1971.

Preemptive Strike (right) leads (from left) Coal Dust, Naughty Prince, and Trebizond at the seventh fence of the Meadow Brook.

Contrarian Stable's Naughty Prince raced in third place throughout most of the Meadow Brook but was bothered by Senor Melchor when that horse fell at the ninth fence and was pulled-up shortly thereafter. The 4-year-old son of Rakeen (by Northern Dancer) is a half-brother to stakes winner Tres Touche.

Senor Melchor was dispatched as the favorite but fell at the ninth fence, while Preemptive Strike fell at the next fence. None of the fallen horses or riders were injured.

Trebizond was bred in Ireland by Vincent O'Brien, who was the master of Coolmore's Ballydoyle Farm prior to retiring and turning the reins over to current trainer Aidan O'Brien. Trebizond is by perennial leading European sire Saddler's Wells (by Northern Dancer) out of a mare by Storm Bird (by Northern Dancer) and as such is very closely inbred (2x3) to Northern Dancer. Trebizond is also inbred 2x3 to full sisters Lisadell and Special, the later being the dam of Nureyev. Both sisters are granddaughters of the blue hen Rough Shod II. This pedigree pattern is very similar to that of 1996 steeplechase champion Correggio (Ire), who was also bred by Vincent O'Brien. Like Trebizond, Correggio is by Saddler's Wells out of a daughter of Lisadell again resulting in 2x3 inbreding to the full sisters Lisadell and Special.

The Meadow Brook is named after the Meadow Brook Hounds, who used to hunt foxes near Belmont Park on the north shore of Nassau County, Long Island. Founded in 1881, the hunt was generally considered one of the best in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. Mr. F. Ambrose Clark, for many years a leading steeplechase owner, was the master of the Meadow Brook Hounds in the 1920's, and the grandfather of current leading steeplechase trainer Tom Voss used to hunt with Meadow Brook when he lived on Long Island. The Meadow Brook Hounds annually held a well-attended steeplechase race meeting on Mr. Clark's property starting in 1919, and the trophy that will be presented to this year's winning owner is the same trophy that was presented to the winning owners last century. The Meadow Brook Hounds folded in 1970 as a result of the development of Nassau County, which borders New York City and is only 12 miles from Manhattan. The Hunt's clubhouse still stands today as the home of the Meadow Brook Golf Club in Jericho, New York.

TAGG RIDES STEEPLECHASE PAST TO BRINK OF TRIPLE CROWN

Trainer Barclay Tagg is fast becoming a household name because of his horse Funny Cide, who could become racing's 12th Triple Crown winner with a victory in the Belmont Stakes June 7th. But savvy racing fans will remember Tagg from the days when he used to ride steeplechase races.

Tagg was a licensed steeplechase jockey from 1964-73, and won 37 steeplechase races including a single season-high of 13 in 1969. That year, Tagg rode 113 races and finished fourth in the overall standings while riding for top trainer Jonathan Sheppard. In 1966, Tagg won his first jump race, a 1 1/2-mile, $500 maiden hurdle aboard Kings Cruise for trainer Peter Howe at Deep Run, Virginia. In addition to Sheppard and Howe, Tagg rode for trainers Burley Cocks, Morris Dixon, Ronnie Houghton, Charlie Cushman and others.

During Tagg's time, steeplechases were a regular fixture at many racetracks and he scored victories at Belmont, Saratoga, Aqueduct and Monmouth Park.

Tagg wouldn't be the first former steeplechase jockey to win the Triple Crown, as Seattle Slew's trainer Billy Turner also started out as a jump jockey.

SUMMER SCHEDULE INCLUDES COLONIAL DOWNS & SARATOGA

Steeplechasing will again be a part of the racing schedules at Virginia's Colonial Downs and New York's Saratoga racetracks. At Colonial, 10 jump races are carded on five consecutive weekends June 15, 22 and 29, plus July 5 and 12.

Highlighting the stint in Virginia is the $50,000 Zeke Ferguson Memorial on July 12. All of the Colonial races will be key stepping stones on the road to Saratoga, which kicks off with the July 20 Open House meeting.

Saratoga's regular schedule will include a jump race on every Thursday during the six-week meet, and the Wednesday of Weeks 2, 4 and 6. The $75,000 Grade II A.P. Smithwick Memorial on July 31st and the $100,000 Grade I New York Turf Writers Cup on Aug. 28th highlight the meet.
