Post-Race Analysis:
April 13, 2002 - Kingston, Georgia: Arcadia Stables Pinkie Swear
fought back gamely to defeat Teb's Bend by a nose in the 37th running
of the $75,000 Grade II Atlanta Cup. Those two charged to the wire
in a finish that was so close that the stewards had to examine the
replay for several minutes before they could declare Pinkie Swear
the winner. Tres Touche finished a good third, 1 1/2 lengths behind
the top pair. The winning time for the 2 3/8th mile test was 4:53
4/5.

Arcadia Stable's Pinkie Swear (center)
defeated Teb's Bend (right) by a nose to win the $75,000 Grade
II Atlanta Cup. Shamrock Isle (left) was fourth.
|
Winning jockey J.W. Delozier put Pinkie Swear into a drive as the
field headed down the backside the last time. "My horse can
gallop along at a good clip all day," explained Delozier after
the race, "but he doesn't have a quick turn-of-foot, so I wanted
the lead turning for home. I really rode him hard from about three-quarters
of a mile out. Then I wanted to make sure he jumped the last two
fences right, and he just flew them."
|
|
|
Jockey J.W. Delozier and Pinkie Swear
anxiously await the steward's decision after an extemely tight
finish in the Grade II Atlanta Cup.
|
Pinkie Swear lead Shamrock Isle by a half-length at the last fence,
and it was another half-length back to Teb's Bend who was coming
strongest of all. Teb's Bend collared Pinkie Swear on the uphill
run-in, and then gained a slight advantage right before the wire.
But Pinkie Swear refused to go down to defeat and battled back on
the outside in a gutsy performance to re-gain the lead by a nose
at the wire. Tres Touche passed Shamrock Isle after the last fence
to claim third place.
Owned by Arcadia Stables, Pinkie Swear was making his first start
of the year after being inconsistent in three starts last year.
The 8-year-old son of Proud Truth (by Graustark) had finished second
in an allowance race, fourth in the Grade I Breeder's Cup and pulled-up
in the Grade I Colonial Cup. His Atlanta Cup victory was his first
since he won the Grade I Iroquois at 3 miles in 2000 under the care
of trainer Charlie Fenwick.
|
|
|
Winning trainer Jack Fisher had Pinkie
Swear ready to win the 2 3/8ths mile Atlanta Cup in his first
start this year.
|
Jack Fisher took over Pinkie Swear's training regimen last year,
and was impressed with his charge's determination: "He's a
tough horse. Teb's Bend went by him after the last fence today and
he really battled back gamely. He was kicked at the start of the
Colonial Cup last year, and came back lame when he pulled-up, but
he's run well in all his other starts for me." Pinkie Swear
improved his career record to 6-5-3 from 23 starts, and will race
next in the two remaining Grade I stakes races this spring. "We'll
run in the $175,000 Royal Chase at Keeneland next," said Fisher
after the race "and then go on to Iroquois and see if he can
win that three-mile race again."

Veteran steeplechase jockey J.W. Delozier
with Mary Teter after winning the Grade II Atlanta Cup.
|
Veteran jockey Delozier, a 10-year journeyman on the NSA circuit,
noted that the Atlanta Cup was the biggest victory of his career,
and his first in a $75,000 race. "Oh I needed this - what a
horse," he said. "He stayed on at the end. I could see Teb's Bend
coming out of the corner of my eye, but I was riding too hard to
know whether I won or not. I broke Pinkie Swear's maiden four years
ago, and this was the first time I had ridden him since. He was
much more relaxed and mature today, and he jumped beautifully. He
reminded me of why I still ride jumpers; he really gave me a big
thrill!"
Teb's Bend was valiant in defeat, and has now hit the board in
all nine steeplechase races that he has finished. Owned by Mrs.
Thomas H. Voss, the 9-year-old son of Whatever For (by Caro (Ire))
won the Grade III Royal Crown Handicap last November in a year that
saw him either fall or lose his rider in his only two other starts
over fences. Teb's Bend has shown ability both on the flat and over
fences, having captured a flat race at Saratoga in 1998 and posting
a career record of 5-2-2 from 11 career starts over hurdles. He
is trained by last year's leading trainer Tom Voss and was ridden
by Cyril Murphy.

Teb's Bend finished a game second in
the Grade II Atlanta Cup and has hit the board in all nine
of the steeplechase races that he has finished.
|
Contrarian Stables' Tres Touche, winner of the $40,000
Little Everglades stakes earlier this year, carried high-weight
of 154 pounds, conceding four pounds to Pinkie Swear and Teb's Bend.
Last year, the 5-year-old son of Poles Apart (by Danzig) won a $50,000
novice stakes at Atlanta, a Saratoga handicap and the $75,000 Foxbrook
Novice Stakes at Far Hills while earning $130,509. Tres Touche then
traveled to England in December where he finished third in a novice
stakes race at Newbury Racecourse. He is trained by former steeplechase
jockey Ricky Hendricks and was ridden by David Bentley.

Tres Touche and jockey David Bentley
finished third in the Grade II Atlanta Cup.
|
Mrs. F. Eugene Dixon, Jr.'s Shamrock Islewas close-up early and
stayed well to finish fourth, while Bruce Smart's Devil's Reach
lead early but faded to finished fifth. EMO Stables' Baksheesh (NZ)
was pulled-up in first start over fences in this country, and Mrs.
S. K. Johnston, Jr.'s Allan Prell, making his first start since
November of 2000, was also pulled-up.

In addition to the Grade II Atlanta Cup, the race card also included
a key prep for the Steeplechase Triple Crown (which starts May 2
at Churchill Downs). The $50,000 novice stakes was won by Mrs. S.K.
Johnston's Najjm, a 5-year-old son of Dynaformer recently imported
from England. Coppertree Farm's Mr. Fater led by five lengths at
the last fence, but was passed by Najjm on the run-in. Arcadia Stables'
Ethical Actions was a the third horse under the wire but was placed
second by the stewards after they disqualified Mr. Fater for interfering
with Ethical Actions through the stretch. Last year's NSA 3-year-old
champion Geaux Beau finished last. Golden Marvel (Fr) was injured
before the race and was scratched.
