Post-Race Analysis:
May 17, 2001 - Baltimore, Maryland. He did it before and he did
it again. Daybreak Stables' Flasher was the only horse in the $100,000
Grade I Joe Aitcheson Novice Stakes to have previously defeated
Praise The Prince (NZ), and he did so again in the second leg of
the Steeplechase Triple Crown, passing heavily-favored Praise The
Prince in deep stretch to prevail by a neck. Golden Marvel (Fr)
finished third another three lengths behind the top pair. The time
for the 2 1/18th mile test over 11 hurdles was 3:45.3, well off
the stakes record of 3:41.6 established by Batchwood in the inaugural
running of the Aitcheson in 1997.
Flasher was ridden for the first time by veteran Chip Miller, who
made a heads-up move at the top of the stretch while still fifth
by wheeling Flasher to the inside for a rail-skimming drive down
the lane. Prior to that time Miller and Flasher were content to
bide their time near the back of the pack as Tres Touche made the
pace until the field straightened away down the backside the last
time. At that point J.W. Delozier gunned War Talk past Tres Touche
to take the lead with Praise The Prince close behind in third. Praise
The Prince launched his bid around the last turn and made the lead
after the last fence but appeared to hang a bit as Flasher collared
him in the final yards. Golden Marvel was never worse than fourth
and made a mild rally through the stretch to finish third as War
Talk faded to fourth.

Flasher won his first stakes race when
he defeated Praise The Prince to capture the Grade I Joe Aitcheson
Novice Stakes.
|
Flasher was coming off a last-place finish at odds of 4-1 in the
first leg of the Steeplechase Triple Crown, the Grade I Hard Scuffle
at Churchill Downs two weeks ago where he was beaten 28 1/2 lengths
by Praise The Prince. That effort explains why the betting public
dismissed Flasher at odds of 12-1. "He didn't eat or drink anything
for three days, he hated the food and water there," said winning
trainer Jimmy Day. "He's just a bad shipper. I knew why he ran such
a bad race in the Hard Scuffle and I was confident he'd run his
best race today."
Flasher has now defeated Praise The Prince three of the four times
they have met: he won their first encounter by a nose in May of
2000, and then edged Praise The Prince by a neck in a hurdle race
at Saratoga in July of that year. Flasher is a the 7-year-old son
of Majestic Light (by Kentucky Derby winner Majestic Prince) out
of the Round Table mare Anything In Sight. He is in-bred 5 x 5 to
both Nearco and Menow. He carried second high-weight of 154 pounds
in the Aitcheson, six less than Praise The Prince.
Even-money favorite Praise The Prince was attempting to win his
last fifth race in a row. The 6-year-old son of Prince Of Praise
(NZ) has never been worse than third in eight starts over hurdles,
sporting a record of 4-3-1. He carried high-weight of 160 pounds
and has now earned more than $195,000 in steeplechase races for
George Strawbridge's Augustin Stables. Praise The Prince was ridden
by last year's leading steeplechase jockey Gus Brown and is trained
by Sanna Neilson.
Beverly R. Steinman's Golden Marvel (Fr) gave a good account of
himself in his first in a steeplechase stake race. Trained by Doug
Fout, the 5-year-old son of Linamix (Fr) had tried Grade I company
before on the flat in France, and won a $50,000 maiden hurdle race
at Keeneland April 27th by 21 lengths. Steinman had previously teamed
up with Fout to win the 1999 edition of the Aitcheson with another
French import, Grand Nord.
Grade III winners War Talk (by the Mr Prospector sire Kingmambo)
and Tres Touche (by the Danzig sire Poles Apart) finished fourth
and fifth, respectively. Dynability (by the Roberto sire Dynaformer),
who was undefeated in both of his starts over fences before the
Aitcheson, finished sixth.
The Steeplechase Triple Crown is restricted to horses that did
not break their maiden over fences before March 1, 2000. The last
leg of the Steeplechase Triple Crown will be the $100,000 Grade
I Meadow Brook at Belmont Park on June 7th.
Fox Ridge Farm's Devil's Egg and Otto Stolz's Ethical Actions both
scratched.
The second leg of the Steeplechase Triple Crown is named for former
champion steeplechase jockey Joe Aitcheson Jr. Aitcheson has more
career steeplechase victories in the United States than any other
steeplechase jockey: 440, which is 42 more than his closest rival,
Paddy Smithwick. By comparison, the top two active jockeys with
the most career wins, Blythe and Chip Miller, each have less than
200 career victories to their credit. Joe Aitcheson Jr. was the
Champion steeplechase jockey in 1961, 1963, 1964, 1967, 1968, 1969,
and again in 1970. He won 40 steeplechase races in 1964, a single-season
record for steeplechase jockeys.
