Post-Race Analysis:
Kingston, Georgia April 14, 2001: Electron electrified the crowd
with a thrilling stretch-run to just barely nail last year's steeplechase
Champion All Gong (GB) at the wire of the 36th running of the $100,000
Grade I Atlanta Cup. Masamadas (GB) finished third. All Gong had
lead the entire second circuit of the course and looked like a winner
as he led over the last fence but Electron, who carried 16 pounds
less than All Gong's 158, just got up through the stretch to win
by half a length.

Electron, who could have been claimed for $20,000 last month, has
the distinction of being the only horse so far this year to win
three NSA-sanctioned steeplechase races. He captured a claiming
race at Little Everglades on March 11th by 8 1/4 lengths and followed
that score with a 3 3/4-length victory in an allowance race at Aiken
on March 24th. "I love this horse" said winning jockey
Craig Thorton after the race. "Dr. Griggs did a helluva job
preparing him - he's very fit. He has the heart of a lion and he
charged up the hill to the finish like a frieght train." The
Atlanta Cup was Electron's first career start in a steeplechase
stake race. He is owned and trained by Dr. John Grigg's of Lexington
Kentucky. The 8-year-old gelding is by Breeders' Cup Classic winner
Wild Again (by Icecapade) who stands at Three Chimneys Farm for
$60,000 live foal.
Calvin Houghland's All Gong won last year's edition of the Atlanta
Cup on his way to becoming the only horse to win two Grade I steeplechase
races in 2000. The English-bred son of Kris (by Sharpen Up) was
ridden by David Bentley for the first time as his regular jockey
Blythe Miller is in Japan to ride Campanile in the $1,420,000 Nakayama
Grand Jump.
Mrs. Jill Johnston's Masamadas (GB) , who finished third, was making
his second start over fences in this country. He was fourth beaten
only 1 1/2 lengths in the Tampa Bay Steeplechase on March 10th.
The 6-year-old son of Elmaamul (by Diesis) is trained by Janet Elliot.
Rowdy Irishman scratched.
In Monkton, Maryland, Doe and Harry Filbert's Ironfist (Voss/Horgan)
won the $20,000 My Lady's Manor timber stake for the second year
in a row defeating Irv Naylor's Emerald Action (Ire) (Fisher/Cushny)
by eight lengths. Frank Martin's Aitcheson Lane (Graham/Brustcher)
was third. The John Rush Streett maiden timber race was won by Mrs.
Henry F. Stern's Kanawha (Fisher/Cushny) after a thrilling stretch
duel with Mrs. J.R.S. Fisher's Matchless (Fisher/Gillet). The win
was the first in an NSA-sanctioned race for 19-year-old Cushny and
gave leading trainer Jack Fisher a sweep of the first two places
in the race.
The results of the Atlanta Cup are set forth below.
