The United States hopes in the world's richest steeplechase
race rested with Campanile. The 7-year-old son of Lear Fan, ridden
by Blythe Miller, raced near the rear of the 11-horse field for
most of the race, which was uncharacteristic as he usually runs
on or near the lead. Campanile made a run at the leaders late in
the race, but he was no match for Gokai, who trounced him by 21
lengths. "Campanile ran very well, but the pace was very fast
and I had a hard time trying to avoid the horses that fell in front
of us" said Miller after the race.
Rand, who was undefeated in all five of his starts over fences
in New Zealand, was dispatched as the favorite but struggled home
seventh after falling over front-runner Ran Through The Turf on
the downhill portion of the step-and-climb fence. Rand's jockey
Ed Lamb held onto the reins after the fall and then remounted his
horse. "Rand ran really well considering the fall" said
Lamb after the race. "I tried hard to catch-up with the front
group. A good jockey never gives up." The 7-year-old gray son
of Omnicorp had won the $320,000 Pegasus Jump in Japan on March
24th, setting a new track record in the process.

Minamino Gorgeous, who ran second in the Pegasus Jump, also ran
second in the Nakayama Grand Jump. Minamino Gorgeous is by Trempolino,
who is also the sire of Hokan, a Grade I steeplechase winner in
the United States.
Five of the 11 starters unseated their riders during the race.
Jockey Ed Lamb re-mounted Rand to finish seventh.
All of the horses that ran in the Nakayama Grand Jump carried equal
weight of 63.5 kilograms (approximately 137 pounds).
Marlborough (NZ) and Symboli Melody were both scratched.
In response to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease that has
contaminated Great Briton, the Japanese Racing Association withdrew
its previously extended invitations to six European-based horses
to compete in this year's Nakayama Grand Jump. As a result, only
two foreign-trained horses, Campanile and Rand, ran in the Nakayama
Grand Jump.
The results of the Nakayama Grand Jump are set forth below.
