Post-Race Analysis:
Camden, SC March 31, 2001: Frank D. Adam's Al Skywalker won his
first race in almost two years when he upset Campanile by 12 lengths
in the 69th edition of the $100,000 Grade I Carolina Cup. Assurance
finished third before a record crowd of 73,000 at the Springdale
Race Course.

Al Skywalker, an 8-year-old California-bred by Skywalker (Relaunch),
is owned by a former champion steeplechase jockey Frank "Dooley"
Adams and is trained by Jennifer Majette. His last victory came
in the Grade III National Hunt Cup at Radner on May 15, 1999. The
dark bay gelding has now won five of 18 career starts over fences
while earning $127,620. The Carolina Cup victory was the first time
that Al Skywalker, Majette and jockey Tom Foley had tasted success
in a Grade I race. Adams had won the Carolina Cup before as a jockey
when he rode Gift of Gold to back-to-back victories in 1951 and
1952, but this was his first Grade I victory as an owner.
"It's always been frustrating with this horse" said Adams,
who rode 301 winners, third most in United States history, en route
to claiming leading steeplechase jockey honors in 1946, 1949, and
from 1951 through 1955. "We decided there was too much speed
in the race (with Assurance, Al Skywalker and Addinson), so we wanted
to rate him, and Tom (Foley) did a beautiful job."
Irish jockey Tom Foley was aboard for the ride, only the third
victory in his brief career. Foley, who was riding Al Skywalker
for the first time, did what other jockeys had not been able to
do: slow down Al Skywalker in the early part of the race. Foley
was able to rate Al Skywalker behind pace-setting Assurance in the
early going, and took the lead with three fences from home in the
2 1/4-mile race. "We knew Assurance would be a speed horse," Foley
explained. "So I tried to sit behind him. I asked for a big run
on the backside, and that's the last I saw of Assurance; that's
the last I saw of anyone. I wasn't intimidated by riding in such
a big race. The older riders have been great to me giving me advice,"
an ecstatic Foley said. "I'm new to all this Grade I thing;
I'm just so over the moon right now."
Gregory Hawkin's Campanile finished second in a Grade I race for
the fourth time in the last year to remain winless in Grade I competition
since August of 1999. His one victory last season came in the Grade
II A.P. Smithwick at Saratoga. Campanile was ridden by Blythe Miller
and is trained by Janet Elliot. The 7-year-old son of Lear Fan (Roberto)
will make his next start in the $1,420,000 Nakayama Grand Jump on
April 14th. "I'm not disappointed with my horse," said Elliot. "But
it was a disappointing race to watch because of the speed. My horse
ran a very nice race and jumped well, but the race just didn't set
up well for him."
Mrs. Henry F. Stern's Assurance, who finished second in this race
to Lonesome Glory in 1999, finish well behind Campanile to capture
third place. The 9-year-old son of Herat (Northern Dancer) has won
five of 22 lifetime starts over fences while earning $122,430.
Hudson River Farm's Addinson, a son of leading steeplechase stallion
Northern Baby (Northern Dancer), finished fourth. Gus Brown rode
the 5-year-old gelding for Hall-of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard.
Timber Bay Farm's Romantic, who closed out the 2000 steeplechase
season with a win over Campanile in the Grade I Colonial Cup, lost
rider Arch Kingsley at the last fence. The 9-year-old son of The
Cool Virginian (Icecapade) is conditioned by Jonathan Sheppard.
Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords' Turkish Corner (Turkoman) fell three fences
from home. Claytonville Stable's Conta Ke Brave (River Special)
was pulled up.
In other action, Augustin Stables' Pompeyo (Chi), who racked up
five wins and more than $211,000 in earnings last year, won the
$50,000 Grade III Woodward-Kirkover Cup. The 7-year-old son of Nureyev
Dancer (Nureyev) was ridden by Gus Brown and is trained by Sanna
Neilson. He was followed across the finish line by Flasher (Massey-Day),
Emancipate (Delozier-Haynes) and War Talk (Kingsley-Sheppard).
