Post-Race Analysis:

Yellowroad denied Pompeyo (Chi) the triple crown, edging Indispensable by a length after an exciting stretch duel in the $100,000 Grade I Meadow Brook at Belmont Park. Pompeyo finished third 1 3/4 lengths in front of Field Day. The winning time was 4:41.95 over a soft course that had been drenched by a steady all-day rain two days before the race. The track record of 4:40 was set by four-time steeplechase Champion Flatterer on September 21, 1984. Yellowroad has now won four hurdle races in a row and is 4-for-5 lifetime over fences. The winner's share of the purse ($64,050) was more than the $44,900 Yellowroad had earned in nine lifetime starts (four over hurdles) before the Meadow Brook.

Yellowroad was content to bide his time early, racing in mid-pack until the field approached the last fence down the backside the last time around when he rushed to the lead. Yellowroad maintained the lead around the last turn as the field was waved inside the beacons to avoid Craig Thorton whose horse, Jack Flash, had fallen during the previous circuit when he clipped heels with Easy Wonder. As the field came off the turn Yellowroad first repulsed a bid from Field Day coming to the last fence at the top of the stretch and then held off Indispensable gamely during the run-in.

"I knew this horse was a giant killer!" exclaimed winning jockey Jonathan Kiser after the race. "I've never been in a situation like that when a rider goes down on the turn. Going around the turn the last time I was in front and wasn't certain where to come back on the course." Gus Brown on Pompeyo claimed foul on the first two horses under the wire, but the NYRA stewards disallowed his claim. "Under NSA rules, we are supposed to honor he last beacon before the fence we are jumping" said Brown. "I wasn't certain if the first two finishers cut that beacon." The replay clearly showed that they did not.

Winning trainer Bruce Miller credited Yellowroad's success to the soft going: "I was in a bit of a shock after the race because Turkish Corner had been our big hope" said Miller, "but Yellowroad loves it soft. Jonathan rode him beautifully." Kiser was not nearly as surprised with the outcome: "I rode Yellowroad in his last start and he really knocked my socks off" said last year's leading rider who again tops the standings this year. "I was a little concerned when Deep Dive opened up 20 lengths on the rest of the field about a mile into the race, but my horse jumped teriffic until the last fence when he was looking around at the grandstand."

Pompeyo ran near the back of the back for most of the race and failedto reach contention until the top of the stretch. "The first time around the turn when Jack Flash went down I ended up galloping right over him" said Brown. "When we came back around that turn I got caught a little too far outside, and was giving up more ground then I wanted to." Pompeyo's trainer Sanna Neilson commented that "Our horse had a pretty rough trip. He could never get into a steady rythem after the start and then he galloped over the horse that went down on the turn."

A complete order of finish for the Meadow Brook is set forth below.

The Meadow Brook is named after the Meadow Brook Hounds, which used to hunt foxes near Belmont Park on the north shore of Nassau County, Long Island. Founded in 1881, the hunt was generally considered one of the best in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. Mr. F. Ambrose Clark, for many years a leading steeplechase owner, was the master of the Meadow Brook Hounds in the 1920's, and current leading steeplechase trainer Tom Voss's grandfather used to hunt with Meadow Brook when he lived on Long Island. The Meadow Brook Hounds annually held a well attended steeplechase race meeting on Mr. Clark's property starting in 1919, and the trophy that will be presented to this year's winning owner is the same trophy that was presented to the winning owners last century. Unfortunately, the Meadow Brook Hounds folded in 1970 as a result of the development of Nassau County, which borders New York City and is only 12 miles from Manhattan. The Hunt's club house still stands today as the home of the Meadow Brook Golf Club, which will be the location of this year's Belmont Ball, which is traditionally held on the eve of the Belmont Stakes. Proceeds from the Belmont Ball go to the benefit of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.
