Post-Race Analysis:
Pompeyo (Chi) come from next to last to capture the $100,000 Grade
I Joe Aitcheson today at Pimlico, the second leg of steeplechasing's
triple crown. Pompeyo also won the Hard Scuffle on May 4th, the
first leg of the Triple Crown, and is now in position to earn a
$250,000 bonus if he can win the Meadow Brook at Belmont on June
8th. The son of Nureyev Dancer was dispatched as the 4-5 betting
favorite. Banjo Man finished second at 17-1 to complete a $40.80
exacta. Shahrahere finished third and Homage was fourth. The winning
time for the 2 1/8th miles was 3:52.41
Little Hurt took the lead down the backside the first time under
stout restraint from jockey Arch Kingsley. Banjo Man, Shahrahere
and Dr. Ramsey tracked Little Hurt while Pompeyo was content to
bide his time in 6th place until the field approached the second
to last fence. At that point jockey Gus Brown moved Pompeyo to the
outside and asked him to run. Pompeyo responded by circling the
field around the far turn to gain the lead approaching the last
fence. Banjo Man, who had dropped back to fourth around the turn,
came with a strong run through the stretch and looked like he might
collar Pompeyo on the run-in. However when Pompeyo saw him coming
he spurted clear to win by 1 3/4 lengths under a hand ride from
Gus Brown, who dropped his whip after the last fence. It was another
3 1/2 lengths back to Shahrahere in third, who in turn finished
3 1/2 lengths in front of Homage.
"Pompeyo loves jumping, and he knows he's good at it"
said Gus Brown after the race. "He likes to settle in the back
of the pack, and I was afraid there would be no pace to close into.
But he was keen today when I called on him."
Prior to winning the Joe Aitcheson and the Hard Scuffle, Pompeyo
had finished second to Jack Flash by 3 1/2 lengths in a maiden race
at Aiken on March 25th before winning a maiden race by 10 1/2 lengths
at Colonial Downs on April 15th.
Lord Zada, Check Ride and Field Day were all scratched.
The race is named for former Champion steeplechase jockey Joe Aitcheson
Jr. who has more career steeplechase victories in the United States
than any other steeplechase jockey : 440, which is 42 more than
his closest rival, Paddy Smithwick. By comparison, the top two active
jockeys with the most career wins, Blythe Miller and Sean Clancy,
each have less than 200 career victories to their credit. Joe Aitcheson
Jr. was the Champion steeplechase jockey in 1961, 1963, 1964, 1967,
1968, 1969 and again in 1970. He is a member of racings Hall of
Fame.
