Post-Race Analysis:
Pompeyo (Chi) won the first leg of steeplechasing's Triple Crown,
taking the $100,000 Grade I Hard Scuffle Novice Stakes by 2 1/4
lengths. Shahrahere finished second one length in front of Turkish
Corner, with Double Leaf (GB) another six lengths back in fourth.
Jack Flash and Yellowroad both scratched, and Cavasham was a faller
at the sixth fence.
Indespensable took the early lead tracked by Double Leaf for the
first circuit of the Churchill Downs turf course, while Pompeyo
was unhurried early. Double Leaf gained the lead going down the
backside with Indispensable still in contention second. As the field
entered the far turn for the last time Blythe Miller put Turkish
Corner on the lead with Double Leaf a head behind and Shahrahere
third. Pompeyo was starting to gain circling the field in a five-wide
move. As they straightened away at the top of the stretch Gus Brown
moved Pompeyo to the track while Michael Traurig elected to come
up the rail with Shahrahere. Those two jumped the last fence together
with Turkish Corner and Double Leaf. As they landed Pompeyo gradually
pulled away through the stretch to gain the victory. Shahrahere
dug in gamely and looked like he might go by Pompeyo 200 yards from
the wire but then flattened out.
