Post-Race Analysis:
Swayo captured the 104th renewal of the Maryland Hunt Cup holding
off Welter Weight by 3 1/2 diminishing lengths. Emerald Action (Ire)
was third and Solo Lord was fourth. The final time over the firm
going was 8:58.2, almost 28 seconds slower than the course record
set by Buck Jakes in 1995. Swayo is trained by Ann Stewart and owned
by Susie Russell's Move Up Stable of Green Spring, Maryland.
Welter Weight's jockey, Mike Ellmore, dropped Welter Weight way
out of the early running, trailing the rest of the field by 20 or
more lengths during the first three miles of the grueling four mile
race. Welter Weight steadily started to close ground from that point
on, but he was still third trailing Swayo by 14 lengths as he cleared
the last of the 22 fences. Welter Weight then came flying up the
rail of the 1/4 mile run-in from the last fence, closing rapidly
on Swayo, but Ellmore had simply left him too much to do. Swayo,
who had plenty in reserve, held on for the victory, as Welter Weight's
bid for a second consecutive Maryland Hunt Cup fell 3 1/2 lengths
short.
Amateur jockey Joe Gillet, who had previously won the Maryland
Hunt Cup in 1998 on Florida Law, gave Swayo all the credit. "The
horse jumped great!" said an exuberant Gillet after the race.
"He deserves all the credit. He really flew a couple of those
big fences and was never in trouble."
The same could not be said about Nem Blong Hem, who matched Swayo
stride-for-stride down the backside the last time as those two tracked
Emerald Action, but fell at the 18th fence shortly after the pace
started to quicken. The other faller in the race, Sarkis, was claimed
by the 15th fence.
As the field turned for home on the downhill run to the 20th fence
Emerald Action, who had led since the fifth fence, was challenged
by Swayo and Solo Lord. Emerald Action jumped the 20th poorly, taking
out the top panel of the board fence, while Swayo stood way off.
As they landed Swayo was in front by three lengths and never looked
back jumping the last two fences flawlessly. Emerald Action ran
up under the last two fences and struggled home third. "He
got a little tired at the end and jumped those last two fences carefully."
said his jockey and trainer Jack Fisher after the race. "He
kind of scared himself when he took out the top panel of the 20th
fence, and that took him out of the race."
