Post-Race Analysis:
Flat Top re-asserted himself as a force to be reckoned with in
2000, winning the $175,000 Grade I Royal Chase by 1 1/2 lengths
over the favorite, Campanile. Flat Top and Campanile were the only
two horses in the race who had previously won a Grade I steeplechase
event. They are both trained by Janet Elliot.
Flat Top missed the entire 1999 season and was making his first
start over fences in 17 months, earning $111,525 for Nancy Gerry
of Locust Valley, New York. Flat Top was the steeplechase Horse-of-the-Year
in 1998 when he scored Grade I victories in the Grand National and
the Colonial Cup. He has now won seven of his 14 lifetime starts
while finishing second twice and earning $355,975.
Campanile stalked the pace setter Snuggle (NZ) before making the
lead briefly on the turn for home before Flat Top went by him. Campanile
held second gamely by 1/2 a length over Pinkie Swear, who closed
with a rush but seemed to hang in the final yards.
