Race Analysis:
All Gong (GB) surprised many by taking the $100,000 Grade I Atlanta
Cup by half a length from novice Allan Prell, with Dearn Tipalarm
another half-length back in third. Street View (Ire) was fourth,
while Rowdy Irishman was fifth and last. Campanile and Sea Spruce
both scratched.
All Gong earned $60,000 in his 2000 debut after earning only $7,800
from two starts last year, when his best placing was a third-place
finish. Nevertheless he pulled jockey Blythe Miller to the lead
as the field approached the second-to-last fence at the top of the
stretch. "My arms were like rubber" said an exhausted
yet thrilled Miller after the race. "But All Gong just wouldn't
let up. He's so strong, he just wanted to go, go, go!"
Second-place finisher Allan Prell had just broken his maiden at
Camden two weeks earlier after notching two seconds and a third
in three starts against maidens last year. Darn Tipalarm, who led
the race until the top of the stretch, has now now run third in
two separate Grade I races this year to earn $20,000 The fourth
horse under the wire, Street View (Ire), had won an open claiming
race at Aiken three weeks ago in his first start over fences in
the United States.
Rowdy Irishman, the only horse to run in the Atlanta Cup who had
previously won a Grade I race over hurdles, has now finished last
in both of his starts in 2000. He earned $90,000 in 1999 notching
one victory and one second place finish from five starts.
