Post-Race Analysis:

Gokai (Jpn) won the innaugural running of the $1,420,000 Nakayama Grand Jump (Grade I) by three-quarters of a length over French-trained Boca Boca (Ire). Irish-bred horses ran second and third as The Outback Way (Ire), who trains in England, was along for third five lengths behind Boca Boca. The Outback Way, a 10-year-old by Kambalda, was making his 56th career start.

Ninepins (GB), trained in the the United States by Hall of Famer Jonathan Sheppard and ridden by Arch Kingsley, finished ninth in a field of 16. Ninepins likes the going soft, and a steady rain fell throughout the day of the race. By post time the course was officially labelled "Good", however Ninepins did not show an affinity for the footing, running near the back of the pack for much of the race.

Sydney Opera, the only horse in the field that was bred in the United States, finished sixth. Sydney Opera is by Risen Star, a son of Secretariat who won the 1988 Belmont Stakes. He trains in France.

Gokia is by Judge Angelucci (USA) a son of Honest Pleasure who earned $730,465 competing in America. He won the Grade I Californian Stakes, as well as the Bel Air Handicap, the San Bernardino Handicap and the Longacres Mile Handicap, all Grade II races.
