Post-Race Analysis:

A misplaced beacon wreaked havoc during the 68th running of the $100,000 Carolina Cup resulting in a controversial disqualification of Campanile who was first under the wire by 2 1/2 lengths. The beacon in question had been used to designate the timber course for a timber race held prior to the Carolina Cup. The Timber Beacon was not relevant to the designation of the Carolina Cup course and should have been removed from the course prior to the running of the Carolina Cup.

As the field rounded the final turn before the homestretch jockey Jonathan Kiser on Campanile was on the left side of the Timber Beacon and began to steer Campanile hard to the right as he approached the Timber Beacon in an effort to pass the Timber Beacon on the right. At the same time Invest West and Snuggle (NZ) were approaching the Timber Beacon from the right and were attempting to pass it on the left. Mayhem ensued when Campanile, Invest West and Snuggle (NZ) all converged on the Timber Beacon at the same time, with Campanile running over the Timber Beacon while colliding with Invest West and Snuggle.

Both Adam Trinder, the jockey who rode Snuggle, and Arch Kingsley Jr., aboard Invest West, claimed a foul against Kiser, claiming that he interfered with them going around the final turn before the homestretch. "There was a misunderstanding how the course was laid out," Kingsley said. "But with or without the claim, my horse was right there; he ran a very game race."

After deliberating for 20 minutes the Stewards ruled that Kiser and Campanile had interfered with Invest West and Snuggle and initially disqualified Campanile to third place. The stewards then ruled that Campanile was to be deemed "unplaced" because jockey Jonathan Kiser failed to weigh in after the race. Several people had in fact seen Kiser on the scales after the race, but Clerk of Scales Frank Hopkins was on the phone with the stewards and had his back turned to the scales at that time. Since Hopkins' word is the only one that matters, Snuggle was placed second, Darn TipAlarm was placed third and Dr. Ramsey was placed fourth.

The disqualification left Campanile's trainer Janet Elliot in tears. Elliot is a former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, who sadded Invest West and is pointing Ninepins for the $1,420,000 Nakayama Grand Jump in Japan on April 15th. "I feel badly for Campanile's owner because I didn't think (his horse's interference) kept us from winning," said Sheppard after the race, "But a rule was broken. It's great to win a big race, but I don't have the normal feeling. I feel badly for Janet; she's a friend."

South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges presented the silver Carolina Cup to winning owner George Strawbridge, Jr in front of a record crowd of 71,000, the largest crowd to ever witness an American steeplechase race.
