Race Analysis:
Augustin Stable’s Sundin (GB) remained undefeated over hurdles
this year capturing the inaugural running of the $50,000 Tropical
Park Steeplechase Handicap (Grade II) by four lengths. Romantic
finished second two and a quarter lengths in front of Indispensable.
Sundin and Romantic each carried 158 pounds as the co-highweights,
and both geldings were conditioned by Hall-of-Fame trainer Jonathan
Sheppard.
Sundin, by Kris out of The Minstrel mare Silver Fling, was bred
in Great Briton by his owner, George Strawbridge. He was ridden
by Jonathan Kiser, who sealed the National Steeplechase Association’s
leading rider honors with the victory. Kiser finished the year with
23 victories, two more than jockey Arch Kingsley, Jr., who finished
second on Romantic.
"He’s a really good horse" said Kiser after the race. "That’s a
lot of weight to concede to those other horses, especially when
you run on the lead." Sundin gave between eight and 20 pounds to
all of the other horses in the race except for Romantic.
Dispatched as the even-money favorite, Sundin went right to the
front and stayed there until the 10th fence when he was momentarily
headed by Romantic. Sundin quickly regained the lead and drew clear
through the stretch after Romantic bobbled at the last of 13 fences.
After taking most of the year off, Sundin returned to the races
in Far Hills, New Jersey on October 23rd when he captured the Grade
III Appleton Stakes by one and ¾ lengths. Two weeks later he captured
the Grade III Crown Royal Stakes at Calloway Gardens, Georgia by
one and ¼ lengths.
Named after Toronto Maple Leaf’s hockey Star Mats Sundin, Sundin
took 4:09.22 to complete the two and a quarter mile test over a
firm turf course.
Rarity Bay, a half brother to this year’s Breeder’s Cup Sprint
winner, Artax was a well placed third early in the race but faded
through the stretch to finish last.
