Race Analysis:
Pinkie Swear, at odds of 34-1, ran a game race to win the Grade
II D.L. Ferguson Memorial by a neck over Ninepins. Campanile, who
had won three graded stakes in a row and conceded ten pounds to
the winner, finished 1 and 1/4 lengths behind Ninepins in third.
Pinkie Swear was the only starter in the field of ten that had not
won a stake race, a fact that was not lost on the betting public
who dismissed him as the second longest price on the board. While
Pinkie Swear's victory may have surprised some, it did not surprise
his trainer, Charlie Fenwick. "He had been training well since his
fifth place finish in the Turf Writer's" said Fenwick. "He gave
a solid account of himself and was determined to not to let Ninepins
get by him." Pinkie Swear was driven between horses by his jockey
Sean Clancy to gain a slim advantage as they turned for home the
final time. Clancy and Pinkie Swear then held off Ninepins by a
neck throughout a thrilling stretch drive to the delight of Pinkie
Swear's owners Andre Brewster, Skip Cochrane, Francis Iglehart and
Mini Watriss.
The high-weight and 3/2 favorite in the race was third place finisher
Campanile. After the race, Campanile's trainer, Janet Elliot, noted
that her multiple graded stakes winner was not as sharp early as
he had been in his last two starts at Saratoga: "He didn't break
well after the false start" said Elliot. "Then he chipped in at
the first fence and got shuffled back near the pack of the pack
around the first turn." This running style was in sharp contrast
to Campanile's last start in the Grade I New York Turf Writers,
which he won wire-to-wire. He had pressed the pace in his previous
victory in the Grade II A.P. Smithwick Memorial. "I don't think
the extra six pounds he picked up after his last victory cost him
as much as the way the race set up" said Elliot, who thought that
Campanile may not have been as sharp early in the Ferguson because
he had been training off the farm since his return from the track
at Saratoga. "He's definitely more alert when he's stabled at the
track" noted Elliot.
Both Campanile and Pinkie Swear are pointing toward a rematch in
the Grade I $150,000 Grand National at Far Hills on October 23rd.
